Respect dare series – day 2 – Champion

Genesis 2:18, 20-23

Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” . . . The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”

We get to see both the best and the worst of our husbands. Sometimes we can focus on the worst and feel we shouldn’t see this side of them at all – that we should get the best of our husbands. Come on, let’s be honest with one another – our husbands get the worst of us, too! It is only natural in a safe marriage – that they feel they can let their guard down with us and us with them. But we are called to be the helpmate of our husband, and they especially need us to fill this role when they are weak. It is when they are weak that they need our strength the most.

Today’s society doesn’t give men much chance to be vulnerable, or to express their hearts. Let us, as their wives, be the safe harbour they anchor their hearts in each day and every night. Let’s be worthy helpmates. Let us create a loving home where they can be vulnerable about their faults. Let us be faithful and steadfast in our prayers for them. When they share with us, let us lend an understanding ear. Let us curb unkind or judgemental tongues. Let us listen with ears to hear and understand, rather than keeping quiet only until we can jump in with judgement or advice.

My action for today: Prayer is the big one. God + one are always the majority. Praying for Glenn to be strengthened is the most important action I can take. After praying I want to speak truth over him, calling out the gifting that I see in him and encouraging him with my support.

My prayer for today: Thank you, Lord, that I have a strong leader as my husband. Help me to remember that it is in his weaknesses that he needs me most. Make me a fit helpmate for him. Help me to be a place where he can feel safe and vulnerable to grow. Remove judgement from my heart and replace it with the love of Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Be a safe harbour for your spouse
