All creation declares

I went up Muizenberg Mountain this week on a hike and I must admit that I never remember how beautiful and awe-inspiring it is until I am once again standing on the peak looking over the vista. From the peak you can see the back of Table Mountain, over the plains with many tiny houses, the river, right across Muizenberg to the see and over to Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town (this is an impressive expanse for those who don’t know the area!)

Looking at the houses got me thinking. They seemed small enough for me to lift up between my thumb and index finger! In comparison, the mountain range stood tall and mighty. It reminded me of when Louie Giglio on his Indescribable Tour quotes Neil Armstrong, recounting how they astronaut said:

“I remember on the trip home on Apollo 11 it suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet earth. I didn’t feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.”

Looking out upon this very small part of the world, I was again struck by the magnificence of God. We look at the buildings around us and we glory in man’s capability. But looking from the mountain top one can only stand in awe of God and realise that we humans are actually very, very small. Yet the amazing thing is that the Creator of All Things loves us and has made a way for us to dwell eternally in His Kingdom!

Psalm 8:3-9

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
